Korea Fantasy Movie ‘DR.CHEON AND THE LOST TALISMAN’ on Netflix

DR.CHEON AND THE LOST TALISMAN

The movie ‘DR.CHEON AND THE LOST TALISMAN‘, which was released on Netflix this week, is a Korean film that was originally released in theaters in September of 2023. Based on the Naver webtoon, the genre of this movie is a mystery, fantasy, and occult. I initially thought the drama ‘The Bequeathed‘, which was released last week, was in the occult genre, but it turns out it wasn’t. However, I can confidently say that the movie ‘Dr. Cheon’ is certainly in the occult genre. The point I noticed after watching the movie is that it leans more towards comedy and fantasy elements rather than the scariness of the occult genre. Moreover, with a running time of about 1 hour and 30 minutes, it’s a light and easy-to-watch movie.

What is the Plot?

Dr. Cheon, a skeptical exorcist, solves cases by performing fake exorcisms. In the midst of this, a client named Yookyung, who can see ghosts, comes to him with an irresistible offer, leading Dr. Cheon to her house to perform an exorcism. Contrary to Dr. Cheon’s expectation that there would be no ghost this time either, the bell that recognizes evil spirits begins to ring. Startled, Dr. Cheon finds himself in a fight against Yookyung’s suddenly aggressive brother, and with Yookyung’s help, they manage to defeat the evil spirit. After this, Dr. Cheon realizes that this evil spirit is the entity he has been chasing for a long time.

Who is the cast?

Dr. Cheon (Actor Kang Dong-won)

Actor Kang Dong-won was cast as Dr. Cheon, who doesn’t believe in ghosts but performs fake exorcisms with ghost-like insight. Many viewers probably thought of the 2007 film ‘Woochi‘ when seeing his witty performance. There are many similarities between the two characters, and it feels like a role that suits Kang Dong-won well.

Beomcheon (Actor Heo Jun-ho)

Actor Heo Jun-ho plays the role of an evil spirit that hunts the spirits of shamans without considering the means. He is a veteran actor who perfectly absorbs any character he plays and delivers his own unique performance. His portrayal of Beomcheon in this movie also received reviews that he showed the villain’s features well with his facial expressions, as befitting a veteran actor.

Oh Yookyung (Actress Lee Som)

Actress Lee Som plays the role of Oh Yookyung, a client who commissions Dr. Cheon to help her possessed brother. Here, you can see another serious side of actress Lee Som, who was recently featured in the drama ‘LTNS‘.

Kang In-bae (Actor Lee Dong-hwi)

Actor Lee Dong-hwi, who gave an impressive performance in ‘Big Bet‘, plays the role of Kang In-bae, also known as Kang Doryeong, who is Dr. Cheon’s partner. He provokes laughter with his character who remains skeptical about ghosts even when everyone else starts to believe.

In addition, many other actors who are actively working also appear in the film. Notably, actor Park Jung-min leaves a strong impression despite his brief appearance, and BLACKPINK‘s Jisoo also makes a special appearance, adding to the film’s attractions.

Simple Review

Looking at the genre, one might wonder how occult, comedy, and action can fit together. Naturally, mixing various genres can create points where it’s difficult to focus on the movie. Unsurprisingly, ‘Dr. Cheon’ does have such points. Moreover, perhaps due to the short running time, the backstory of each character and the logical progression of the story feel slightly lacking. Nevertheless, I think it’s a decent movie for a light watch to kill time, so I recommend giving it a try.
